Chapter 1 The Supervisor's Job
- What is supervision?
- the first level of management in organization
 - Concerned with encouraging the members if work unit to contribute positively.
 - Supervisor must have varied skills
 
 - Who are supervisors?
- First established in the Bible (Moses)
 - Have various levels. Top. Middle. Supervisor
 - Fair Labor Standards Act defines who a manager is.
 
 - Sources of Supervisory Talent
- From within organization
 - Officers of Labor Unions
 - College graduates
 
 - The Functions of Supervision
- Functions
- Planning - determine where you are at, determine the objective, and determine best way to reach goals.
 - Organizing - distributing the work among the employees.
 - Staffing - obtaining and developing good people.
 - Leading - directing people to accomplish of work objectives.
 - Controlling - see if objectives met and correcting
 - Various levels of management will use these skills in different percentages, but all are necessary for good supervisory skills.
 
 - Skills - Another way to look at skills breaks into 4 groups
- Technical - knowledge of how things are done
 - Human Relations Skills - how to work with people
 - Administrative Skills - how the organization works
 - Decision making skills - analyze and make decisions
 - Theses skills like above are in different mix based on level of management.
 
 - Key Reasons for Supervisory success
- ability and willingness to delegate
 - proper use of Authority
 - setting a good example
 - Recognize Change in roll.
 - Desire for job

 - The Changing Nature of the Supervisor's Environment
- Changes in Information Availability
- Access to Internet
 - Cell phones, teleconferencing and the like.
 - These rapid changes require more skilled employees
 
 - Changes in Outlook towards the Work Environment
- Workforce demographics
- Workforce has more woman
 - Workforce has more Hispanics (taking over as primary minority)
 - Workforce is getting older
 
 - Opportunities and Challenges of Diversity
- Everyone is not the same and these differences presents challenges (and contributions)
 - Glass ceiling
- Woman and other minorities cannot rise above a certain point in great numbers
 
Organizations and government are looking on how to change this.

 - Avoid stereotyping
 - Evaluate output, not input
 - Don't make assumptions about nonstandard behavior
